Cotton House occupies a nineteenth-century building on Gran Via that was raised as the seat of the cotton trade association of Barcelona. The house was made for meetings, offices and display, and it was worked over at the start of the following century by the architect Puig i Cadafalch. Rooms were fitted into that structure much later.
The most visible survival is the curved stone stair rising through the main hall, with panelled walls and tall windows around it. The old library and meeting rooms are kept as public rooms, and a glazed room at the rear opens onto a planted inner yard. Bedrooms are placed on the upper levels within the original divisions.
The address sits in the Eixample, the grid laid out across the plain in the nineteenth century, where the blocks are cut back at every corner. The older centre begins a few streets to one side, and the buildings of the same period stand along the avenues in each direction.
