The Serras occupies a house of the eighteenth century on a street beside the harbour front in Barcelona. The building belonged to the working edge of the port, where trade and storage filled the lower levels and living quarters sat above. Published material notes that the young Gaudí kept a studio at the address long before rooms were fitted into it.
The frame of the old house sets the interior: floors of unequal height, thick masonry at the base and openings that follow the street rather than any modern plan. Rooms were fitted inside that structure and finished plainly, with contemporary work hung through the public levels. A terrace was added on the roof, from which the harbour is in view.
The quarter around it is the oldest part of the city, laid out in narrow lanes that run between the cathedral and the water. The harbour front is a few minutes on foot, and the market halls, the older churches and the museums of the Born district lie within the same walk.
