Linked snow domes under worked ceilings with light from a cut opening

Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf builds a village of packed snow on high ground above Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. Domes are raised over inflated forms, then the forms are drawn out and the snow is left to set. The whole village goes up at the beginning of the cold months and comes down again as the ground clears in spring.

The domes are linked by short cut passages, and sources describe sleeping domes of different sizes, a bar and a common dome for eating. Interiors are carved by hand, the theme changes from year to year, and beds are set on snow platforms with thermal bedding. Washing is handled in serviced units set beside the village.

The site sits well above the town and is reached by the mountain railway and a walk on snow, which is a matter of ground conditions rather than a fixed route. Access, opening dates and what to bring are all set by the operator and should be confirmed with them.
