Grand Hotel Union was built in 1905 on a corner in central Ljubljana, in the wave of construction that followed the earthquake of the previous decade. It was designed in the Vienna Secession manner, with a curved corner, a turret above the entrance and a run of ornament across the upper levels. It has served as a house of lodging since it opened.
The great hall on the first level is the part most often described: a large assembly room under a glazed ceiling, used for concerts and gatherings since the building's early years. The stair, the public rooms and the corridors keep their original proportions, and rooms were fitted into the existing structure over successive refits.
The building faces Miklošičeva Street, which was laid out at the same period and lined with work of the same generation. The river, the market halls and the old town under the castle hill are within a few minutes on foot, and the whole centre is closed to through traffic.
