Book and Bed Shinjuku

Tokyo, Japan

Book and Bed runs several houses and this is the Shinjuku one, on upper floors of a building in Kabukicho. The berths are cut into the shelving itself, so a guest sleeps behind the books rather than in a moulded unit. Published material describes two kinds of berth, one set behind the shelves and a larger one with a window.

The floor is arranged as a reading room first: shelves in Japanese and English run the length of the walls, with seating, low tables and a counter between them. Washing rooms, showers and lockers are shared, and the shelves stay open to guests through the night. Quiet is asked for on the sleeping side of the floor.

Kabukicho is the dense quarter north-east of Shinjuku station, built up with eating houses, cinemas and small shops. The station is a few minutes on foot and carries lines in every direction, which makes the address easy to reach at almost any hour.
