Casino Rama Resort stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation in Ontario, near Orillia and east of Lake Couchiching. The complex opened in 1996 and was built for the purpose, with a hotel building, an entertainment hall and dining floors joined into one low group set in open ground. Published material describes it as the largest employer in the surrounding area.
The public parts include an entertainment hall used for concerts, a run of dining rooms, a spa and rooms held for events, alongside the hotel floors. The entertainment hall is the part most often written about, since touring programmes are booked into it through the year. Parking and the entrances are arranged around the outer edge of the group.
The setting is rural: lakes lie on either side, with Lake Simcoe to the south and Lake Couchiching immediately west. Orillia is a short drive away and holds the nearest town centre, and the highway north from Toronto passes within a few kilometres of the site.
