Wide snow hall under a rounded vault with carved side walls

Lainio Snow Village

Ylläs, Finland

Lainio Snow Village is raised at Lainio in Finnish Lapland, on the ground between the Ylläs and Levi centres. Work begins when the cold sets in: snow is packed over frames and ice is drawn from nearby water. The site is built from the ground up each autumn and left to melt when the season closes.

The plan changes every winter, since the operator sets a fresh theme and carves the halls to suit it. Sources describe vaulted rooms, a bar cut from ice, a chapel and sleeping rooms fitted with block beds. Passages are cut low and the vaults are lit from behind the walls, which is what makes the carving legible.

Warm buildings stand beside the frozen ground for washing, changing and eating, and the operator keeps rooms of ordinary construction in the area. Opening and closing dates move with the weather, so the current season should be checked with the operator rather than assumed.

This guide is independent and made for reference. Everything here comes from published material and can change without warning. Frozen buildings stand only through the cold months and are cut again from new material each year. We hold no link with any of the operators listed, sell nothing and hold no reservations.
