Long banded frontage of a converted store filling one side of a square

Hotel Skt Petri

Copenhagen, Denmark

Hotel Skt Petri stands in a building that was raised as a department store and served that trade for much of the twentieth century. The structure gave it long window bands and deep floors, which are still what the elevation shows from the street. The shop closed and the building was converted to lodging around the turn of the century.

The conversion kept the deep plan, so corridors run long and rooms are set around a central well. An open hall at the ground level takes the place of the old shop floor and holds the reception, seating and a bar. Danish furniture and contemporary work are used through the public levels, and the finish is kept plain.

The Latin quarter around it holds the older university buildings, small squares and the bookshops that came with them. The pedestrian street through the centre is one block away, and the canals, the older churches and the station are all reachable on foot within a quarter of an hour.
