Hotel Herman K stands in a former electrical transformer station in the old centre of Copenhagen. The building was raised as a piece of civic infrastructure, with the heavy structure and tall openings that such work required, and it served the city's supply for decades. When the equipment was taken out, the shell was left and rooms were fitted within it.
Inside, the height of the original hall is still readable, and the conversion left the structural walls plain rather than lining them. Rooms are placed within the frame, so their proportions follow the old openings. The ground level holds the reception and a dining room, and a terrace sits above, looking over the roofs around it.
The address is in the dense part of the centre, a short walk from the older squares, the canals at Gammel Strand and the shopping streets that run through to the station. The quarter is largely built up in brick and stone and is easiest covered on foot.
