Hotel Marktgasse occupies a house in the Niederdorf lanes on the right bank of the Limmat in Zurich. Published material traces the address back several centuries and describes a long history of lodging and serving guests at the same site. The house was worked over more than once, and the most recent conversion returned it to use with rooms above and a tavern below.
The plan follows the old structure: a narrow frontage, a stair set to one side and rooms of unequal size on the upper levels. Timber and stone left from earlier work were kept where they could be, and new fittings were made plain so the contrast is legible. Eating and drinking rooms hold the ground level, as they long did.
Niederdorf is the old quarter of the city, a run of lanes closed to traffic and lined with houses of similar age. The river, the older churches and the university ground above are all within a short walk, and the main station is a few minutes away on foot.
