Row of carved snow chambers along a cold passage with worked walls

Snowhotel Kirkenes

Kirkenes, Norway

Snowhotel Kirkenes stands on a site a short distance from Kirkenes, in Finnmark at the north-eastern edge of Norway. The operator gathers and stores snow through the cold months, then works it into walls and chambers with carvers brought in for the purpose. The material is renewed every year and the interior is cut again from the start.

Sources describe chambers carved out of snow and ice, with worked walls and block beds dressed in thermal bedding. Washing, changing and dining take place in heated buildings on the same ground, and the operator keeps cabins of ordinary construction beside the frozen part. Guests move between the two through the length of a stay.

Unlike most frozen buildings, this one is described in published material as being held cold and kept in use through the whole year rather than the winter alone. That claim is the operator's own, so anyone planning a summer visit should confirm it directly before travelling.

This guide is independent and made for reference. Everything here comes from published material and can change without warning. Frozen buildings stand only through the cold months and are cut again from new material each year. We hold no link with any of the operators listed, sell nothing and hold no reservations. Confirm the current arrangement with the operator.
