Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Icehotel stands in Jukkasjärvi, a village on the Torne river in northern Sweden. The material is taken from the river itself: blocks are cut in spring, held through the warm months and used when building starts in late autumn. Artists and builders work on the halls together, and the finished structure is open to guests through the cold part of the year.

The seasonal building is laid out as a run of cold halls and sleeping rooms, each one shaped by a different pair of hands, so no two are alike. Sleeping rooms are furnished with a block bed and thermal bedding. Washing, changing and storage are handled in a heated service building close by, not within the frozen walls.

The operator also keeps a structure that is held cold well past the winter, together with warm rooms of ordinary construction on the same site. Which halls are standing depends on the year, so the current arrangement is worth settling with the operator directly.

This guide is independent and made for reference. Everything here comes from published material and can change without warning. Frozen buildings stand only through the cold months and are cut again from new material each year. We hold no link with any of the operators listed, sell nothing and hold no reservations.
